North Side started as Allegheny City in the late
18th century and was a thriving independent city until it
was annexed to Pittsburgh in 1907.

The Icee Ball Man
The North Side is full of traditions like the Icee
Ball man across from West Park. He, and his father before him, has been
selling ice balls, popcorn, and peanuts at the street stand since 1934.

West Park: Pittsburgh's earliest urban park
West Park was originally part of the common grazing
land. Around the mid-1800s it was turned into the first urban park in
western Pennsylvania.

The National Aviary at Pittsburgh
The National Aviary houses over 400 exotic birds
and runs a breeding program for endangered rare birds. During the Civil
War there was a prison for Confederate soldiers on this site.

Mexican War Streets, Community Gardens
Mexican War Streets, dating from the 1840s and 1850s,
take their names from the great battles of that war. Restored row houses
and community gardens are a source of neighborhood pride.

Doug's Market in the Mexican War Streets
Small businesses are important to the neighborhood's
sense of community. Doug's Market is an old fashioned butcher shop that
serves lunch and makes homemade sausage and kielbasa.

Wilson's Bar-B-Q is a family owned business whose
secrets are a wood-fired grill and a secret sauce handed down from ex-slave
ancestors.

Ridge Avenue neighborhood: Millionaire's Row
Allegheny West, west of West Park, used to be the
Gold Coast of the city of Allegheny. Ridge Avenue and Brighton Road,
now mostly occupied by the Community College of Allegheny County, were
called Millionaire's Row

Manchester neighborhood
By taking preservation seriously, Manchester has
rehabilitated what was in danger of becoming a slum. Manchester Commission,
whose members are people in the community, approves all remodeling and
requires authentic restoration of exteriors. A Queen Anne style house
is in the process of restoration.

Troy Hill is an old German neighborhood atop one
of the steepest hills in Pittsburgh.

Heinz plant

H.J. Heinz and the modern Heinz factory
The world headquarters of Heinz is located in old
red brick buildings along the Allegheny River. Many families have worked
at the Heinz plant for generations making pickles, horseradish, mustard,
ketchup, and soups.

Blvd. Houses seven floors of materials chronicling the life and work

and development lab for artists," is a gallery specializing in "installation"
and "performance" art.

Three Rivers Stadium, The Pirates, and Exposition
Park
In the parking lot of Three Rivers Stadium are faint
symbols marking the base pads of Exposition Park, built for the Pirates
in 1891. The team was organized as the Alleghenies when they first went
professional in 1876.

East Ohio Street retail stores
East Ohio Street is home to many family owned businesses,
including Stedeford's Record Shop; Bernie's Photo Center, Pittsburgh
Camera Exchange, Pittsburgh Custom Darkroom and Photo Antiquities.
Carlisle's Bridal Shop is run by a descendant of
the original owner of Carlisle's Hat Shop in the late 1800swhen
brides' wore their best dress and bought a new hat to make it special.
Paul Doyle's Barber Shop has been on the North Side
for 41 years, relocating to East Ohio Street when his original building
was torn down for Allegheny Center

Old Allegheny Square becomes Allegheny Center
The heart of the North side was Allegheny Square
until it was dismantled in the 1960s to become Allegheny Center. Boggs
and Buhl department store was located there.
The old Allegheny Market House was right in the
center of the old business district.

North Side's German heritage is still evident. Max's
Allegheny Tavern serves good German food and is a neighborhood gathering
place .
Penn Brewery brews German-style beer in the restored
Eberhardt and Ober Brewery and serves authentic German food in the Brewery
Restaurant. They have an Oktoberfest every year.
